The pub is very much at the heart of village life and we have diversified the traditional Pub offering to encourage everyone in the community to use the pub for some purpose. We are proud that we have created the relaxed atmosphere that makes everyone feel comfortable coming to our pub.
We provide basic groceries, fresh bread, eggs, vegetables and milk and have even been known to supply the odd cup of sugar to our neighbours!
In 2008 some banter around the bar led to us raising money to put a Christmas Tree on the village green for the community. The initiative was so well supported that we raised £2500, well over our target of £1200. As a result of this in January we launched The Blacksmiths Arms Community Fund which is run by a committee from the village and which now hosts community based events for Naburn.
Our events this year have included
A Valentine Casino hosted at the Pub, proceeds of which were donated to Naburn Primary Schools Mezzanine fund raising project.
A village Spring Clean which saw approximately 50 residents turning out to enjoy bacon butties & coffee provided by the fund and an enjoyable day was had as the residents took to the streets and gave the paths, road signs and communal areas a tidy up before the summer season.
We organised an Easter Party for the children with games and a Disco and of course an Easter Egg to take home!
In the summer we hosted an outdoor Music & Picnic Gala. Over 100 residents brought their own picnics and joined us for this completely free event which included a “Naburns Got Talent” contest and entertainment from the fabulous York Centurion Show Band and The Chingford Morris Men.
As our continued involvement with the schools fundraising afforts to provide a new teaching area for the children The Blacksmiths Arms Community Fund sponsored each child at the school with £1 with which they were asked to use to raise further funds for the school, we are looking forward to finding our how the kids invested their money and how much money they raised! 70 children turned their £1 into over £250!!
Every Wednesday afternoon at 3pm Maria hosts a Coffee afternoon for the village, held at the pub it is a lovely way to meet people in the village and is sponsored by The Blacksmiths Arms Community Fund.
Events still to come this year include
Naburn’s Pumpkin Festival, Auction of Promises and another wondeful festive evening in December where for the third year we will light up Naburn with another fabulous Christmas Tree and evening of carol singing and mulled wine!
